Troubleshooting

Most BRYKK problems fall into a few categories. Here's how to fix the common ones.

I'm not getting any notifications

The most common cause: iOS notification permissions were denied for BRYKK.

  1. Open the iOS Settings app (not BRYKK)
  2. Scroll to Notifications
  3. Find BRYKK in the list
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is ON
  5. Make sure Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are all checked
  6. Optional: enable Critical Alerts so SOS and crash detection can override Do Not Disturb
💡
If one device is still quiet after this, open BRYKK on that device, give iOS a moment to refresh permissions, then relaunch once.

A family member shows as 'last seen' from hours/days ago

Common causes:

  • Their phone died. BRYKK pushes a final “low battery” location before shutdown so you have the last known spot.
  • They're in a dead zone. BRYKK queues updates locally and bursts them when signal returns.
  • They closed/uninstalled BRYKK. Open it back up and tracking resumes.
  • iOS suspended BRYKK aggressively. Background location should keep BRYKK alive, but iOS occasionally kills apps for memory pressure. Open BRYKK to wake it.
  • Location permission downgraded. Have them check Settings → Privacy → Location Services → BRYKK → make sure it's set to Always.

The map keeps centering on the wrong spot

BRYKK's smart camera follows priority logic: SOS → active driver → home habitat → wide fit. If you want to manually frame the view:

  • Pinch and drag to where you want
  • Tap the recenter button (right side, below the SOS button) to fit everyone again
  • Tap any family member's avatar in the off-screen stripe to fly the camera to them

A family member has duplicate saved places

If you still see duplicate places, swipe-left on the extras and delete them manually. Newer builds are much better about warning before duplicates are saved in the first place.

Going forward, BRYKK warns you before saving a duplicate: “Work is already saved within 50m of this location. Save anyway?”

My iPad isn't showing the family

First decide which case you're in: is this your own iPad, or a separate family member's iPad? BRYKK supports both, but the fix is different.

  • Your own iPad: confirm it is signed into the same Apple ID as your iPhone and that iCloud Drive is on
  • Someone else's iPad: install BRYKK on that device and join the family normally with the family code
  • If the iPad still looks empty, open BRYKK on it again and let it finish syncing before force-quitting or reinstalling

Known limitations — iPad GPS accuracy

BRYKK works on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV — but the location accuracy depends on the hardware in each device, not on BRYKK. Setting expectations honestly:

  • iPhone — most accurate. Largest GPS antenna, most satellite constellations, motion-sensor fusion that keeps tracking smooth in tunnels and urban canyons. Use iPhone as the primary BRYKK device whenever possible.
  • Cellular iPad (iPad with SIM/eSIM) — has a real GPS receiver, but the antenna is smaller and supports fewer satellite constellations than iPhone. Outdoor accuracy is generally good (within ~10–30 meters); indoor or stationary accuracy can be 2–3× wider than iPhone.
  • Wi-Fi-only iPad — has no GPS chip at all. Apple estimates position from nearby Wi-Fi networks and the iPad's IP address. Accuracy near a known Wi-Fi network is ~30–100 m; away from Wi-Fi the position can be hundreds of meters off, or sometimes pinned to the ISP's central office.
💡
We don't recommend a Wi-Fi-only iPad as anyone's primary BRYKK device. Keep it as a household viewing screen on the wall and let an iPhone share the actual real-time location. BRYKK applies extra smoothing and route-snapping on the receiving side to dampen visible jitter from low-accuracy iPad fixes, but no app can fully compensate for hardware limits.

Known limitations — iOS background and Always Location

A few iOS behaviors are out of our hands and worth knowing about so they don't surprise you:

  • Always Location is required for arrival, departure, dead-zone resume, and crash-detection logic. “While Using” only is enough to open BRYKK, but most family-safety features won't fire when the app is backgrounded or the screen is locked.
  • Force-quitting BRYKK pauses tracking until next launch. iOS treats a swipe-up kill as a strong signal that you don't want the app running — so background updates stop. Reopening BRYKK once is all it takes to resume.
  • Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode can both delay BRYKK pushes. Apple throttles silent CloudKit pushes hard in either mode. We've designed around it where we can, but a phone in Low Power Mode is going to update less often.
  • Carrier and Wi-Fi dead zones can delay updates. BRYKK queues writes locally and flushes the moment signal returns — so you'll see a burst of catch-up updates rather than missing data.

CarPlay music ducks when BRYKK opens

If this still happens, update to the newest BRYKK build first. Older builds had audio-session issues that could interfere with music playback.

If you're still seeing it after updating, force-quit BRYKK and reopen. If the bug persists, email us and include the device plus car setup.

The 'Coming Home' alert isn't firing

Three things have to be true for the Coming Home alert to fire on the receiver:

  1. The receiver is at the saved place that matches the sender's destination (cityState = “At Home”)
  2. The receiver has “Coming Home to You” toggled ON in Settings → Notifications → Location
  3. The sender actually started a trip with the destination set (tap Go on Home from the search bar, or CarPlay-triggered driving with destination)

If the sender just starts driving without setting a destination, the regular “On the road” flow runs instead — no Coming Home alert because BRYKK doesn't know where they're heading.
